The Model 1766 replaced the Model 1763 which was produced as an infantry weapon much stronger than the previous models. The 1766 was a much lighter version of the same rifle. In 1776 when the War for American Independence began, France happened to have plenty of the Model 1766 rifles and were able to supply large quantities to the United States Army. The rifle is produced in .69 caliber with a walnut stock and oil finish. Barrel length is 45",overall length is 60", weight 10 pounds.
